Sakinah bint Hussain, the youngest daughter of Imam Hussain and Rubab was a vivacious child, full of love and happiness. Everyone loved Bibi Sakinah, she was also a very religious girl, and she enjoyed reading the Holy Quran and never missed her prayers. From the age of two she took great care to make sure that her head and face were properly covered when in public.
Her early years were said to have been spent in Medina. Her brothers included Ali ibn Hussain, Ali al-Akbar ibn Hussain, Ali Asghar ibn Hussain. Her sisters included Fatimah as-Sughra and Fatimah al-Kubra.
Lineage
She was Aminah, daughter of Al Husayn ibn Ali. She was born in the forth decade from the time of the prophets migration. Her mother was al-Rabab, from the Banu Kalb tribe. She was named after her grandmother Aminah bint Wahab, the mother of the Prophet, peace be upon Him.
Her upbringing
Sayyeda Sakinah grew up in the huge family house of the Prophet, especially in the Prophet’s nephew Al Hussein bin Ali’s home, may Allah have mercy on them. She grew up on the prophet’s teachings and manners. She and her father were very close and used to pursue peace and tranquility in the company of each other. Being the daughter of the holy Imam, she was different from other children of her age in many ways. She was very religious and enjoyed reading the Holy Quran and never missed her prayers. From a very early age, she took great care to make sure that her head and face were properly covered when in public. She was a Hafiz e Quran at four years old. By the time she reached her womanhood, she earned high reputation due to her exceptional qualities such as graciousness, knowledge and a good character.
Her marriage
Sayyidah Sakinah (R.A.) married Mus’ab bin al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, and what a good wife she was to her husband and what a good mother she was to her children. She performed her house chores and reared her children in accordance with the Prophetic guidance, which she had inherited from her father. After her marriage to Mus’ab ibn al-Zubayr, her star shone even more brilliantly in the universe of virtuous women and earned widespread fame in the Islamic territories for her knowledge, gracious morals and the kind of care she accorded her children and husband. In 72 AH, her husband Muṣʿab was killed by Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf. The majority of the narrators and historians suggest that Lady Sakina married three times: first to Mus’ab ibn al-Zubayr, followed by Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Abdullah, and then Zayd ibn Amr ibn Uthman ibn Affan.
Her attributes and knowledge
She had inherited all the virtues and qualities of her ancestors. She was the best of the noble ladies of her time, the most beautiful among them, the most elegant, and the nicest in mannerism. She was blessed with a sharp intellect, enlightened mind, and a broad perspective. Sayyidah Sakinah (R.A.) was of strong of character, steadfast, patient in facing crises, and she never gave up to despair. She was renowned for her poetic and literary taste as she was one of the eloquent woman of Quraysh and Banu Hashmim. She was very generous and always shared whatever she had with others. Her mother, Rabab, nicknamed her Sakina because she was a source of peace.
Her death
Sayyidah Sakinah (RA) was approaching eighty-having reached a level of knowledge excellence that set her apart from women of her time. The journey of her life ended in the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal 117 AH in Madīnah according to the strongest opinion of historians. Her body was scented with thirty dīnārs worth of perfume. Her funeral prayer was led by Shaybah ibn Naṣṣāḥ, and she was buried in the Baqīʿ cemetery.
